A Journey of Healing to Artistic Expression

Emerging from a personal struggle with post-partum anxiety and depression, Erica found solace in the therapeutic creation of textured art. Inspired by social media, a simple tub of plaster, some tools, and canvases, creating her textured art became her gateway to self-expression. The addictiveness of the creation process not only helped her heal but also unveiled an innate talent. This therapeutic hobby has flourished into a small business and launched her journey as an artist in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

The Hawke's Bay artistic milieu – a rich tapestry of established artists, council initiatives, and local organisations – became her guiding star. Their unwavering support, inspiration, and insights became pivotal for Erica. Such communal bonds, combined with her initial therapeutic foray into art, have been transformative.

With the sands of time, multiple moments have shaped Erica's creative process. A significant one is the honour of showcasing her works at The Art Shed in Bay View, Napier, and being spotlighted amidst established names in local art exhibitions. Such recognitions have fueled her drive to continuously refine her art, influenced by everyday emotions, natural vistas, and personal interactions. The ocean, in particular, plays a muse to Erica's art. Growing up by the Malaysian sea and now residing close to Hawke's Bay's shores, her works often celebrate the duality of the sea – its tranquillity and its tempestuousness.

Erica's initial creations, known for their modern minimalist textures, have evolved to incorporate a contemporary flair. Her penchant for gold leaf on predominantly white backgrounds remains consistent, but she’s unafraid to traverse new territories. Current explorations include sculpture painting – a journey she's excited to unveil soon.

Two endeavours close to her heart are the Textured Art Zone at Recreate Play and the Priceless Textured Art Workshop. Through these initiatives, Erica gives back to the community, emphasizing art's therapeutic aspects and its potential to unearth hidden talents.

Erica's approach to art intertwines mindfulness and meticulous organization. As a perfectionist, she's driven to detail; however, mindfulness allows her to embrace and find beauty in imperfections. Embracing imperfections, she sometimes leans into her mindful ritual when she needs focus. Writing her gratitude or intentions on a floating wish paper, she lights it, watching it float upwards. This act not only grounds her but primes her for her next artistic challenge.

Art for Erica is not just about creating; it's about community engagement. Seeing art as a therapeutic force, she is keen on sharing this solace with others. She believes in the transformative power of art, encouraging others to find their creative voice. “Who’s to say,” Erica reflects, “we might not discover the next Picasso or Kusama among us?” For her, talent is nurtured through experiences and opportunities. Through her work, she hopes to spark that artistic journey in others.

With her ties to the ocean and the coast, her works often echo these themes, with pieces like 'Treasures of the Sea' and 'Barnacles' standing out. The former, an ode to the sea's hidden gems, was recently on display at Creative Arts Napier. The latter has found international acclaim and has been transformed into an exclusive rug.

The future looks promising for Erica. Collaborations with local businesses, textured art sessions, and a special appearance at the Wonder Christmas Market are upcoming. But the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Determining her art's worth was a significant one, but with her community’s support, she navigated this aspect. Erica aspires that her pieces not only enhance spaces but also inspire budding artists.

Erica’s story highlights the redemptive and transformative nature of art. From personal adversity springs a legacy of beauty, for which she remains ever thankful to her community.
